Last May 8 was National Student Nurse Day. This is the day when the struggles, challenges, triumphs, achievements, and victories of student nurses are recognized. I've known of people who had to overcome almost insurmountable events in order to get their nursing degree. It's so gratifying to see them still smiling and giving their very best in their chosen career pathways.
But there are student nurses whom we will never be able to see: graduate, have their capping ceremony, wear their nursing uniforms, show their gentle and caring moments. They are the 53 student nurses who perished in the 2011 Christchurch quake. These men and women came from eight countries: New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Thailand, China, Ireland, Taiwan and the Philippines. We will never see the great paths they all were aspiring for.
Today, May 12, It is so heartwarming to see that the city and people who suffered the most in that 2011 earthquake hasn't forgotten them. People gathered at Christchurch's earthquake memorial wall to pay homage and honor for those who perished. Gone too soon but must never be forgotten.
